President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on December 24 to discuss the development of Surxondaryo region, job creation, and poverty reduction. Over the past eight years, $3 billion in foreign investment has been attracted to the region, and 4,000 industrial enterprises have been launched. Industrial output has doubled and is expected to reach 17.2 trillion soms this year.
Positive results were also achieved in poverty reduction: 126,000 families are expected to be lifted out of poverty this year, and the poverty rate is expected to fall from 9.3% to 5.6%. The “Topalang” reservoir has solved the drinking water problem for 2 million residents of the region.
At the same time, the region lags behind others in industry, agriculture, services, and tourism. Fruit and vegetable exports are low, and the number of hotels is insufficient. Therefore, new projects will be implemented next year to utilize mineral resources and tourism potential.
At the meeting, the regional governor presented new projects. The head of state also gave instructions on road repair, housing construction, and improving social infrastructure. Funds for driver projects and the creation of 9,000 new jobs are planned.
