Birth rates decline, divorces rise: what changes in society?

A new trend is being observed in the demographic indicators of Uzbekistan — birth rates are decreasing, while conversely, divorces and mortality rates are rising. This was revealed by the latest data provided by the Statistics Agency.
Population continues to grow

As of April 1, 2026, the permanent population of the republic exceeded 38,382,000 people. This represents an increase of nearly 685,000 people, or 1.8 percent, compared to the previous year.
50.9 percent of the population lives in urban areas, while 49.1 percent resides in rural areas. The number of men stands at 19.33 million, and women exceed 19 million. In terms of regions, the highest population was recorded in Samarkand and Fergana regions, while the lowest figure was noted in Sirdaryo region.
Birth rates are declining

In the first quarter of the current year, 191.1 thousand babies were born, which was recorded as the lowest figure in the last five years. For comparison, 205.7 thousand births were observed in the same period of 2024, and 198.1 thousand in 2025.
Mortality rate has increased
In January–March 2026, 43.5 thousand citizens passed away. This is 2.1 thousand more people compared to the corresponding period of last year.
Marriages decrease as divorces rise

During the three-month period, 42.3 thousand marriages were registered in the country. This figure has decreased by 1.5 thousand compared to the previous year.
At the same time, the number of divorces increased, with 12.7 thousand families recorded as having divorced. This is 1.2 thousand more than in the same period of 2025.
