A shortage of air traffic controllers was observed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on the day an American Airlines passenger plane collided with a Black Hawk military helicopter. The New York Times reported this, citing a preliminary report from the US Federal Aviation Administration.

According to the document, the air traffic controller on duty was alone on the day of the incident, a task usually performed by two employees. The NYT added that the collision of the passenger plane with the military helicopter occurred because the helicopter was flying above the designated altitude.

The crash killed 67 people, including all passengers on the plane and the helicopter.

According to media reports, the American Airlines plane was carrying 1994 world figure skating champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, as well as bronze medalist of the USSR championship in pair skating Inna Volyanskaya. Today, it became known that former figure skater Alexander Kirsanov was also among the passengers. The athlete's death was reported by his wife Natalia Gudina to ABC.
