Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been fitted with an electronic bracelet after being convicted of wiretapping. As Le Monde reports, this is an unprecedented measure for a former head of state.
Sarkozy will now only be allowed to leave his home between 8:00 and 20:00, and until 21:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. During these days, he is due to appear in court in a case opened by Libya over the financing of his presidential campaign.
It is noted that Nicolas Sarkozy's appeal to the French Supreme Court in the so-called "secret wiretapping" case was rejected on December 18, 2024, and the sentence of 1 year in prison and its replacement with electronic monitoring was left unchanged.
Sarkozy "continues to challenge the substance of the sentence," said his lawyer Jacqueline Laffon, adding that he will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights "by the end of the month." However, this does not prevent the execution of the sentence.
The former head of state is currently on trial until April 10 on suspicion of illegal financing of the 2007 election campaign by Libya.
It is noted that Sarkozy can apply to have the bracelet removed if he meets certain conditions stipulated by law for persons over 70 years of age. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
