How did China react to the talks between Russia and the US?
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing supports the "recent consensus" reached between Russia and the United States in Riyadh. This is the first comment by a high-ranking Chinese official on the Russian-US talks.

"China supports all efforts to achieve peace, including the recent consensus reached between the United States and Russia, and expects the parties to find a stable and long-term solution that addresses mutual concerns. China is ready to continue to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis through political means in accordance with the requests of the parties and taking into account the concerns of the international community, especially the global South," Wang Yi said in a statement.

The minister stressed that Beijing is “actively promoting peace” in accordance with the four principles outlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping in April 2024. They are “maintaining peace and stability”, mitigating and reducing the negative impact of war on the world economy, and disrupting supply chains.

Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the G20 summit in Johannesburg. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the issue of Ukraine was also discussed at the meeting, but no details were provided.

On February 21, Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Vladimir Putin would speak to Xi Jinping by phone in the near future.

China, which did not join Western sanctions due to them, has managed to significantly strengthen trade relations with Moscow, which has been deprived of Western markets and technologies. Some analysts believe that the Donald Trump administration has taken the path of improving relations with Russia as part of its global strategy to contain China.
