Rajababu Kumar, 32, from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, tired of the constant pain in his abdomen, tried to perform surgery on himself instead of going to the doctors.
He had been suffering from appendicitis for a long time. He made the risky decision based on information he had gathered from the Internet and YouTube to have it removed, the Times of India reports.
On Wednesday evening last week, he locked himself in his room and was given local anesthesia to numb the pain. Then, he made an incision in the lower right part of his abdomen about 7 centimeters long and 18 centimeters deep. However, the knife went deeper than expected, causing more pain and profuse bleeding.
Rajababu tried to stitch the wound 10-12 times, but the stitches were not placed properly, causing the bleeding to stop. He then informed his family members about his critical condition. Shocked and horrified, his relatives immediately rushed him to the Mathura District Hospital.
According to Shashi Ranjan, a doctor at the Mathura Hospital, the patient had cut his abdomen measuring 7x1 cm. However, the stitches were not properly placed, so the wound did not close properly. After the necessary surgery, he was shifted to a major medical facility in Agra in a critical condition.
According to Ashwini Kumar, the superintendent of police of Jait district, a hospital official informed the police about the incident. “He was in a very critical condition, but he was conscious,” he said.
Rajababu's relative Rahul Kumar said that he had always said that he had undergone an operation on his appendix before and complained about the pain in the area.
"He bought the surgical equipment himself. Then he cut open his abdomen and operated on himself. He may have given himself injections to relieve the pain. But when the pain became too much, he went outside and called us," said a family member.
Rajababu's condition is currently critical. Local authorities have started an investigation into the incident.
