European leaders have rejected easing sanctions against Russia at a meeting in Paris. The meeting was attended by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as representatives of the European Union.
UK: "Now is not the time to lift sanctions"
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that it is too early to talk about lifting restrictions on Russia.
"On the contrary, we discussed how to strengthen sanctions in order to support the US initiative and force Russia to the negotiating table," he said.
Ukraine pleased with decision not to lift sanctions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who participated in the meeting, also expressed satisfaction with the position of European countries. He stressed the need to strengthen sanctions against Russia and said that he was in favor of "more pressure."
Black Sea negotiations and Russia's demands
As a result of US and Ukrainian talks in Saudi Arabia, the parties agreed to a truce in the Black Sea. In response, Russia said that sanctions must be eased. The Russian side is demanding the lifting of sanctions on agricultural exporters, as well as the connection of Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system.
However, the European Union has rejected Russia's demands. According to European Commission representative Anitta Hipper, restrictions on Rosselkhozbank will not be lifted.
US offers Russia talks
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on March 26 that Russia has been offered sanctions relief in exchange for a ceasefire at sea. According to him, Washington intends to hold talks with Russia and the European Union on this issue.
At the same time, the European Union is not seriously considering lifting or easing sanctions. This means that economic pressure on Russia may remain for a long time. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
