US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that the timing of the Russia-Ukraine war depends not on Washington, but on Moscow and Kiev.
Peace talks continue
Rubio stressed at a briefing for journalists that America is trying to achieve peace and that the war will last "as long as it takes." He also said that Washington could not give specific dates for the negotiations that have been held with the parties to the military conflict over the past month.
"I can't guarantee that this agreement will be signed in a week or a month. It depends not on us, but on the Russians and the Ukrainians," the US Secretary of State said.
Negotiations and sanctions issue
Rubio stressed that sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union would be an important part of any deal. At the same time, he refused to confirm allegations that Russia was deliberately dragging out the negotiations, but acknowledged that the war was "complicated."
"I never said that this process would be easy. It is not easy to work with Russia, especially since we have not had a dialogue for several years," he said.
What agreements did the parties reach?
Peace talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine began in February 2024. Since then:
- Russia and Ukraine agreed to a US proposal not to attack energy infrastructure.
- The US and Ukraine agreed to a truce in the Black Sea.
- Russia said it would agree to a Black Sea deal if sanctions on agricultural exporters were lifted and Rosselkhozbank was connected to the SWIFT system.
There have also been several phone calls between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, and a trilateral meeting has been held in Saudi Arabia.
Although the United States is actively involved in the peace talks, Secretary of State Rubio has said that the timing of the end of the war depends directly on the decisions of Moscow and Kiev. The United States has expressed its readiness to move diplomatically, but Russia's approach to the talks and Europe's sanctions policy will affect how quickly or slowly this process will proceed.
