Acting Pentagon Inspector General Steven Stebbins announced that an investigation has been launched over a Signal messenger chat where strikes on Houthis in Yemen were discussed, Bloomberg reported.
According to Stebbins, the “appropriate review” began in response to a request from lawmakers. Senators Roger Wicker (Republican) and Jack Reed (Democrat) had earlier asked him to examine the “facts and circumstances” surrounding the case.
Bloomberg noted that such letters usually prompt a swift investigation. After Donald Trump assumed the presidency in January, former inspector Robert Storch was removed from his position along with several others.
The Atlantic reported that on March 14, senior Trump administration officials discussed possible military strikes on Houthis in a private Signal chat. Among those in the chat were Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President J.D. Vance.
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz took responsibility for the leak — stating that he created the chat and invited journalist Jeffrey Goldberg on his behalf.
National security and intelligence analysts harshly criticized the use of commercial messengers for classified military planning. They argue it constitutes a severe breach of operational security and may violate the Espionage Act and federal records protocols. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
