Putin and US ambassadors sit down at the negotiating table again: is peace imminent?

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Special Representative Steve Witkoff held another round of talks in the Kremlin. This was reported by the Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov. The parties discussed important issues between the two countries and the peace plan proposed by Donald Trump for Ukraine.

In addition to the meeting with Putin, Witkoff also held talks with Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov and Russia's Special Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. Before the meeting, the American diplomat reportedly took a short walk in central Moscow with Dmitriev, Interfax reported.

Recall that Steve Witkoff is acting as the US's chief negotiator with Russia, and this is his fourth meeting with Vladimir Putin. They last met in St. Petersburg on April 11 of this year.

However, Moscow has not yet made a clear position on how it assesses the peace proposal developed by Donald Trump. Neither Russian officials nor the media have published information about the main features of this plan. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has consistently stressed that the negotiations should be held in a closed format. At the same time, Russia's position on one point is clear: Moscow firmly opposes the plan of European countries to deploy peacekeeping forces on the territory of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the American CBS television channel published a short excerpt from an interview with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The full conversation will be broadcast on Sunday. In the interview, Lavrov confirmed Trump's opinion that "the parties are moving in the right direction" and stressed that Russia is "ready for a deal" but requires some aspects of this agreement to be revised. Lavrov noted that the two sides are currently working on these issues.

It is still unclear what the final outcome of the talks between the two sides will be. However, recent active diplomatic efforts suggest that Moscow and Washington are close to an agreement on Ukraine.
