Important peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which were scheduled to take place in Istanbul, have been postponed by a day from their original date, to Friday, May 16, Russia's TASS news agency reported.
According to the initial plan for the talks, the delegations of the two countries were to meet on May 15 at the historic Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. Although the Ukrainian delegation arrived in Turkey with a high-ranking delegation on that day, the Russian side proposed postponing the meeting by a day.
It should be recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin, in response to calls from the European Union and the United States for a 30-day ceasefire, put forward the initiative to hold direct peace talks in Istanbul on May 15. Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky supported this proposal and expressed his readiness to meet with Putin in person in Turkey, the Russian side did not confirm Putin's personal participation and announced that he was sending his delegation headed by Vladimir Medinsky.
In his statement, Ukrainian President Zelensky criticized Russia for sending second-tier representatives instead of high-ranking representatives, noting that this situation demonstrates Moscow's lack of seriousness in the negotiations. However, at the same time, the Ukrainian side, out of respect for US President Donald Trump, paid serious attention to this meeting and sent high-ranking representatives.
The Ukrainian delegation will consist of the following high-ranking officials:
- Minister of Defense - Rustem Umerov (head of the delegation);
- First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs - Serhiy Kyslytsa;
- Deputy Chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine - Oleksandr Poklad;
- First Deputy Chief of the Foreign Intelligence Service - Oleg Lugovsky;
- Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - Oleksiy Shevchenko;
- Deputy Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate - Vadim Skibitsky;
- Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force Command - Yevgeny Shinkarev;
- Deputy Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces Command – Alexander Dyakov;
- Head of the International Law Department of the Central Legal Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces – Alexey Malovatsky;
- Senior Officer of the Main Operational Directorate of the Armed Forces – Alexander Sherikhov;
- Officer of the Protocol Department of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – Georgy Kuzmichev;
- Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine – Alexander Bevz.
The postponement of the peace talks to May 16 has further increased the attention of the international community. The results of this historic meeting in Istanbul may have a significant impact on the future of relations between the two countries.
