Direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are once again continuing in Istanbul. The head of the Russian delegation, presidential adviser Vladimir Medinsky, emphasized that the main goal of these meetings is to eliminate the causes of the armed conflict and achieve sustainable, long-term peace. This was reported by the RIA Novosti news agency.
“The goal of direct negotiations with Ukraine is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and reach lasting peace, even if delayed,” Medinsky said during a press briefing in Istanbul.
"There is a working atmosphere, we are ready for negotiations"
According to Medinsky, the Russian delegation is fully prepared to discuss possible agreements. He stated that the Istanbul negotiations are a logical continuation of the peace process that was interrupted in 2022.
“Positions have been identified during the negotiation process. The official delegation, approved by the president's decree, includes representatives and heads of all major government institutions. They have full authority to conduct negotiations,” Medinsky added.
He also emphasized that the delegation is approaching the conflict constructively and is aiming to find points of mutual understanding.
Putin personally approved the delegation
Russian President Vladimir Putin personally approved the composition of the delegation participating in the negotiations in Istanbul on the evening of May 14. According to the decree, Vladimir Medinsky was appointed as the head of the delegation. Other members include Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, and GRU Chief Igor Kostyukov.
Medinsky also led the Russian delegation during the Istanbul negotiations in 2022. This time as well, he is serving as Russia's primary spokesperson in the peace process.
