US President Donald Trump made a major statement that has shocked the world community after a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 19. According to him, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to begin talks “immediately” to end the war and end the fighting.
“A crucial phase is beginning”
Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“Our conversation lasted two hours and was very positive. Russia and Ukraine will begin peace talks. They will set the terms themselves - only they have the real information.”
This news was urgently conveyed by Trump to Ukrainian President Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the leaders of France, Italy, Germany and Finland. The Vatican also expressed interest, through the Pope, in serving as a neutral venue for the talks.
Putin: “Russia is ready for compromise”
Russian President Putin also positively assessed the conversation and said that he had offered Trump to work together on a “peace memorandum.”
“Our main goal is to strive for peace. But at the same time, it is also important to eliminate the factors that caused the crisis,” Putin stressed.
After peace, broad economic cooperation
Trump noted that Russia had announced its intention to establish broad-based trade relations with the United States after the war. He noted that Russia has “almost unlimited economic potential” and emphasized that “this is an opportunity for recovery and job creation.”
“Ukraine will also benefit from this process. They will play an important role in the economic recovery after peace,” the US leader emphasized.
