US President Donald Trump spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 19, the Wall Street Journal reported.
According to sources, Trump and Zelensky held brief diplomatic consultations. The Ukrainian leader, in particular, called for a direct exchange of views with Russia on a 30-day ceasefire agreement, as well as for a summit with Ukraine.
According to Zelensky, he asked Trump not to make any decisions on Kiev without Ukraine's participation:
"This is of principle and utmost importance for us. If Russia's position does not suit us, the United States should consider this as a sign of its unwillingness to stop the war."
Zelensky stressed that he was waiting for "signals" on Russia's next steps and asked the United States to consider new sanctions. He said that if Moscow does not intend to end the war, sanctions should be imposed.
After the conversation between Trump and Putin, the US leader was in touch with Zelensky, French President Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. It was not disclosed what they discussed during the conversation.
The possibility of holding new talks between Trump, Zelensky and European leaders in Turkey, the Vatican or Switzerland is currently being considered.
