Zelensky: Russia is prolonging peace, we are waiting for a real result

Zelensky: Russia is prolonging peace, we are waiting for a real result
After a phone conversation with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb on May 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on Russia’s latest actions. According to him, Moscow is attempting merely to buy time through negotiations with the United States.

"It's clear that Russia's goal is not peace, but rather using negotiations to prolong war and occupation," Zelensky wrote in a statement on the X social network.

Sanctions and diplomatic pressure – the only tool

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that work is currently ongoing with international partners to increase pressure on Russia, specifically through precise sanctions to change its behavior.

"I thank everyone imposing clear and effective sanctions against those responsible for this war," Zelensky said.

"Peace talks must include real proposals"

President Zelensky stated that Ukraine is prepared for any negotiation format that is productive and can yield real outcomes. However, he stressed that if Russia enters negotiations with unrealistic conditions, this could lead to serious consequences.

"In such a situation, not only peace but overall security would be under threat," he emphasized.

Zelensky: "We will not withdraw troops, this is our homeland"

Following the phone conversation between Trump and Putin, Zelensky said he received information about their latest conversation from the U.S. president. Responding to this, the Ukrainian leader reiterated:

"Ukraine under no circumstances will withdraw its troops from its territories. If Moscow demands this from us, it means they do not desire peace. They know very well that Ukraine will never agree to this."

"Ceasefire – a sign of genuine intent"

According to the Ukrainian president, the critical first step towards ending the war should be a ceasefire. If Russia is genuinely willing to compromise, it can demonstrate its intentions precisely through this measure.

From the editors of Zamin.uz:
In Zelensky’s words, one can sense the firm position of a leader seeking peace not in words, but in actions. Negotiations are not a one-way street; their effectiveness is shown only through tangible actions by both sides. What do you think: who should take the first step towards peace?
