Trump gets rebuffs from Putin, Xi and Iran - talks stall
According to Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump is failing in his campaign promises to reach quick agreements with Russia, China and Iran. His diplomatic efforts have so far been met with rebuffs from these countries.

Moscow and Beijing are “difficult partners”

In recent days, Trump has commented on his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He described the June 4 meeting with Putin as “good, but not going to lead to peace quickly.” He also called Xi Jinping “a very difficult person” to negotiate with.

Negotiations on a nuclear deal with Iran are also difficult. Trump has said that Washington will never allow Tehran to have a nuclear weapon. He believes that Iran does not need such a sophisticated nuclear program to meet its energy needs for peaceful purposes.

Iran, however, remains firm on its terms. They do not intend to abandon highly enriched uranium, but they have stated that they will never develop nuclear weapons and are ready to destroy their stockpiles if the US lifts economic sanctions.

US enemies are ready to threaten, friends are cautious

Cory Sheik, an analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, explains this situation as follows:

“The countries that US presidents can pressure are America’s friends because they don’t want to damage relations. But the enemy countries are not afraid to take this risk.”

Jeremy Shapiro, director of the US program at the European Council on Foreign Relations, adds:

“Trump tries to maintain good relations with autocratic leaders. He doesn’t seek to threaten them so much, he respects them more. For this reason, he is wary of making deals that are unequal and do not benefit Trump in negotiations.”

The shadow of a trade war with China is returning

Since the Trump administration came to power, relations between the United States and China have been sharply cold. Washington has increased tariffs on Chinese goods to 145 percent, while Beijing has imposed retaliatory measures of 125 percent.

In May, during talks in Geneva, the parties reached an agreement to temporarily reduce tariffs. However, Beijing has since accused Washington of violating the agreement and promised to protect its interests.

Negotiations on Ukraine - far from the expected results

Resolving the military conflict in Ukraine was one of Trump's campaign promises. However, he is currently failing to achieve this goal. The United States has been seen as inactive in this process - American representatives did not participate at all in the recent Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul.

According to media reports, Trump is increasingly distancing himself from the negotiations and is disappointed with the process.

Donald Trump's "different diplomacy" - a strategy of "respectful dialogue" instead of aggressive pressure and close ties with autocratic leaders - seems to be paying off this time. His opponents are rejecting his political pressure.

The gap between his campaign promises and the current reality raises serious questions about his foreign policy effectiveness.
