The tragedy that occurred last year off the coast of Sicily, Italy, became the focus of worldwide attention. The expensive superyacht named Bayesian sank to the bottom of the sea in just two minutes, claiming the lives of many people. Yesterday, according to an Associated Press source, after nine months, the yacht was successfully lifted from the water.
Italian rescue services, after a three-day nonstop operation, delivered the 56-meter yacht to the port of Termini Imerese. Here, the prosecutor’s office and investigative authorities are currently working to determine the true causes of the accident. This case sparked major discussions not only in Italy, but throughout Europe and the United States.
Among the owners of the Bayesian yacht was one of Britain’s most famous and successful technology entrepreneurs, Michael Lynch, who was called the “British Bill Gates.” Because of this incident, he and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, as well as Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Blumer, perished. In total, there were 22 people on the yacht, and as a result of the disaster, several major business and financial leaders lost their lives.
This 56-meter superyacht, worth 35 million euros, sank on August 19, 2024, 800 meters from the shore. According to investigators, three members of the crew are accused of irresponsibility, carelessness, and failing to properly assess the danger of the storm. The prosecutor's office reports that they did not realize in time that water was entering the Bayesian yacht, and most importantly, made serious mistakes in warning passengers about the danger and taking emergency action.
Speaking of Michael Lynch, he was famous for creating the software company Autonomy and trying to sell it to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. However, he was accused of fraud in the US and ultimately the deal collapsed. But during a court case held in San Francisco, Lynch was acquitted of all charges.
Thus, the Bayesian disaster shocked not only industry representatives, but also the global public. This event once again reminded everyone of the importance of safety rules and responsibility.
