US Vice President J.D. Vance and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy held high-level talks on Saturday at the Chevening estate near London to discuss the war in Ukraine. The meeting was convened at the request of the US and was attended by security officials from the US, Ukraine and Europe.
During the day, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, describing the meeting as “an important step towards peace.” Zelensky, for his part, stressed that he firmly rejects any territorial concessions to Russia.
On 15 August, a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place in Alaska to discuss the future of the war. Trump had previously suggested the possibility of Ukraine ceding some territories in exchange for peace, while Russia demands recognition of its sovereignty, a reduction of Ukraine’s military capabilities and abandonment of its NATO membership plans.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that “Ukraine’s future cannot be decided without Ukrainians” and noted that Europe’s security is directly linked to these negotiations.
In Ukraine itself, both civilians and soldiers express a desire for peace, but say they are not prepared to accept an agreement reached without the country’s participation and at the cost of territorial losses.
