According to official data received on August 8, since October 7, 2023, the number of people who have died from hunger in the Gaza Strip due to food shortages and a deep humanitarian crisis has reached 201. Among these victims, 98 are children, which is noted as the most severe and painful fact, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported.
It was reported that in the last 24 hours, another 4 people — including two children — died as a result of hunger and malnutrition. During this time, although Israel has allowed partial entry of humanitarian aid since July 27 this year, the total volume covers only about 14% of the population’s needs. In this period, 945 trucks entered the region, but according to the local administration, the majority of them were looted with the involvement or acquiescence of Israeli forces.
In addition, according to UN estimates, only 1.5% of agricultural land in Gaza remains under Palestinian control. This virtually deprives the local population of the ability to supply themselves with food independently. Gaza’s administration estimates that to minimally meet the population’s needs for food, fuel, medicine, and essential goods, at least 600 humanitarian aid trucks must enter daily.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, gave a strong assessment of this situation. According to him, Israel’s restriction of access to food for Gaza’s civilian population could be considered a crime against humanity. He also emphasized that the volume of permitted aid is far below the necessary level.
For reference: since October 7, 2023, as a result of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, at least 61,258 people have been killed and 152,045 others have been injured to varying degrees. Experts warn that these figures may lead to even more severe consequences.
