The leaders of five European states — French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Polish leader Donald Tusk — issued a joint statement regarding the summit between Trump and Putin.
According to their remarks, they are ready to work on the possibility of organizing a new trilateral summit with European support and participation. This demonstrates their intention to create a new diplomatic platform.
The statement particularly emphasized the issue of Ukraine. In the view of the European leaders, Ukraine must have unrestricted opportunities for its armed forces. Furthermore, it was stressed that Russia must not, under any circumstances, have a veto right over the country’s path to joining the European Union or NATO.
It was also underlined that Ukraine must make its own decisions regarding its territories. Any external pressure or imposed conditions were completely rejected.
European states reaffirmed once again that they will not stop supporting Ukraine. They stated that until a just and lasting peace is achieved, sanctions and economic pressure on Russia will continue to intensify.
In conclusion, the joint statement by European leaders is seen as a sharp signal to Moscow. Supporting Ukraine is considered the main way to strengthen security on the continent and pave the way toward long-term peace.
