According to the news, which has been accepted as a sensation in the scientific world, the US biotechnology startup Colossal Biosciences has begun implementing a project to revive the dodo bird, which completely disappeared in the 17th century. According to a report published by Bloomberg, the company has set a seven-year deadline to achieve this goal.
The company's scientists have already managed to grow primary sex cells from pigeon species, which is considered one of dodo's closest relatives, under laboratory conditions. This experiment may reveal the possibility of genetic reproduction of dodo in the future.
Colossal Biosciences raised over $120 million to implement the project, bringing the company's total funding to $555 million. The market value of the startup is estimated at 10.3 billion dollars. In the coming years, it is planned to build a special center for the study of birds and genetic research in the state of Texas.
This startup had previously gained widespread attention by reviving the "terrible wolf." Scientists have created a much larger new species by combining samples taken from fossilized remains with the genes of modern gray wolves. As a result of this experiment, animals 20-25 percent larger than modern wolves were created. However, this project caused widespread controversy, as some experts argue that the newly created species is not a real scary wolf, but a genetic combination close to their distant relative.
