US-Africa trade deal under threat
Thousands of workers in Kenya are worried about the possible expiry of the African Growth and Opportunity Act. For 25 years, this law has allowed African countries duty-free access to the US market.

Kenya’s garment industry has gained significant revenue through this programme. Last year, clothing worth $470 million was exported to the US, providing jobs for more than 66,000 people.

Production at the Shona EPZ factory has declined. The factory director said that if the programme is not extended, workers will have to be laid off. This will affect many families.

African countries are holding talks to extend the agreement. Experts stress the need to find new markets and strengthen internal trade.
