The Desert Covered in Flowers

Chile’s Atacama Desert has been unexpectedly covered in flowers this year. Usually extremely dry, the region received heavy rain in August, allowing dormant seeds in the soil to sprout.

Experts say this phenomenon happens only once every few years. This year, the desert received more than 12 millimetres of rain in just one month.

More than 200 species of wildflowers grow in Atacama, some of which exist nowhere else in the world.

According to Chilean officials, the blooming will continue until November, and the desert is now experiencing its most beautiful period.
