US President Donald Trump expressed his intention to exert economic pressure on Madrid for refusing to increase Spain's defense spending. According to him, Spain is the only NATO member that does not spend 5% of its GDP on defense needs.
"I am very dissatisfied with Spain. They are the only country in NATO whose defense spending has not reached 5%. Therefore, I am considering introducing import tariffs on Spanish products," Trump said in an interview with journalists at the White House.
According to him, Madrid's sluggishness in this matter could negatively impact European security. Earlier, Trump, at a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, also noted that Spain is significantly lagging behind other NATO members in terms of defense spending.
"We have one lagging country - Spain. We need to contact them and find out why they are unable to fulfill their obligations. They have no reason. Perhaps, frankly speaking, it's time to remove them from NATO," Trump said.
The Spanish government, in turn, stated that it is fully implementing the initiatives to increase the combat readiness of the armed forces and coordinate with NATO, although it has not reached the targeted level of defense spending.
