On October 16, during a press conference at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump made an important statement regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, Washington will take all necessary measures to prevent the conflict from turning into a large-scale global war.
“I think it could lead to World War III, but that will never happen,” Trump said, answering reporters’ questions. He emphasized that he personally takes responsibility for preventing any possible escalation.
Trump stated that the current situation in Ukraine was the result of mistakes made by the previous administration. “Ukraine was in Putin’s focus, but during my presidency he would never have done this. It happened because of wrong political decisions,” the White House leader said.
The president also recalled that upon taking office, he described the existing Ukraine policy as “a complete mess.” According to him, the conflict must be ended “to save people’s spirits.”
“I’m not doing this for us, I’m doing this for Europe’s peace. We’re an ocean away, but they want this war to end. They can’t manage it, but I can,” Trump said. He stressed that peace in Ukraine can only be restored through dialogue, and that the U.S. should play a leading role in that process.
During the press conference, Trump also announced that his planned meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest would “likely take place within two weeks.”
“U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold preliminary talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Vice President J.D. Vance and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will also take part in the negotiations,” Trump said.
According to political analysts, Trump’s statement may pave the way for renewed talks between Russia and Ukraine. His upcoming meeting in Budapest is seen as an important step toward resolving the conflict through diplomatic means.
Experts emphasize that Washington’s renewed position could mark a new stage in European security. Trump himself described this mission as “a task to preserve human life and restore peace.”
