Another tragic sea disaster occurred near the Tunisian coast. According to Valid Chtabry, a representative of the Mahdiya city prosecutor's office, the bodies of 40 African immigrants were found on board the wrecked ship, and another 30 people were rescued. This was reported by AFP.
According to Chtarabi, the preliminary investigation showed that there were 70 people on board the ship. "Among those found are infants," the prosecutor's office representative said. Search and rescue operations are currently underway.
Such disasters have been frequently occurring on the Tunisian coast in recent years. In 2022, four boats carrying migrants capsized near the country's coast, killing at least 12 people and missing 10 migrants. At that time, it was reported that there were 120 people on board the ship, and 98 were rescued.
Also in 2019, a boat carrying migrants from Libya capsized near Tunisia, killing 82 people, with only four surviving.
The European Union announced the completion of a rescue operation off the coast of Libya in 2019. During this operation, more than 650 thousand migrants were rescued from the waters. But the activities of smugglers and groups engaged in the illegal transportation of migrants have not stopped - and this annually kills hundreds of innocent people.
