A new and dangerous strain of bird flu adapting to humans has been detected in Germany, reported Bild. As a result, quarantine and restriction measures have been tightened at poultry farms in several regions of the country.
According to reports, since September many dead wild birds have been found in different areas. The virus has so far been identified in 9 out of Germany’s 16 federal states.
Over the past two months, due to the spread of the highly contagious H5N1 strain, more than half a million birds have been culled. The highest number of cases was recorded in Lower Saxony, where infections were confirmed at 13 poultry farms.
Experts warn that the likelihood of the new strain adapting to humans is increasing and emphasize the need to strengthen epidemiological monitoring.
