At least 163 journalists have been killed worldwide over the past two years, reported the United Nations. According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, this figure is recorded in UNESCO’s report covering the period from August 2023 to May 2025.
Out of the total, 109 journalists were killed in conflict zones, including 12 women. The highest number of victims was recorded in the Gaza Strip (46 people), Sudan (13), and Ukraine (8).
However, the threat is not limited to war zones. In Mexico, the situation remains extremely dangerous, with 15 media workers killed. Overall, the highest number of confirmed killings occurred in Arab countries (82), followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (34), the Asia-Pacific region (30), and Europe and North America (12).
According to UN data, the level of impunity for crimes against journalists remains high. The main reasons include weak judicial systems, corruption, and a lack of political will.
Reporters Without Borders stated that between 2023 and 2025, 1,163 journalists were arrested. Among them, 568 remain imprisoned, mostly in Belarus, China, Israel, Myanmar, and Russia.
It should be noted that the UN has designated November 2 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. The date serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting freedom of speech and those who fight for the truth.
