According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, 163 journalists have been killed worldwide in the last two years.
According to UNESCO, 163 media workers died between August 2023 and May 2025. Of these, 109 were in combat zones, including 12 female journalists.
The highest number of deaths was recorded in the Gaza Strip - 46 people, Sudan - 13 people, and Ukraine - 8 people.
Also, attacks against journalists continue in non-war countries. For example, in Mexico, 15 media representatives were killed, which indicates a situation even more dangerous than in some war zones.
The highest number of murders by region was recorded in Arab countries (82). The following places are occupied by Latin America and the Caribbean (34), the Asia-Pacific region (30), Africa (5), and Europe and North America (12).
According to experts, these figures once again confirm that freedom of speech and the safety of journalists are under serious threat on a global scale.
