Using a phone while driving in the Netherlands costs 440 euros

From January 1, 2026, fines for traffic violations in the Netherlands will increase by an average of 4%. One of the biggest changes is related to using a phone at the wheel, and now drivers who use a phone without a special hand-free device will have to pay a fine of 440 euros.

Even a slight increase in speed will lead to serious financial losses for drivers. In particular, exceeding the speed limit by 5 km/h in the city is punishable by a fine of 46 euros, and exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h on the highway - by a fine of 229 euros. Passing the red light will result in a fine of at least 320 euros.

Violation of the parking rules is also not cheap. Fines for improper parking start from €130, while illegal parking in a designated area for people with disabilities costs €400.

Also, aggressive driving is strictly punished. A fine of up to €320 is charged for overtaking from the right, and a fine of up to €380 is charged for keeping the distance between cars below normal.

The most important aspect is that the Dutch fines are unavoidable. These fines are also collected abroad, and in case of late payment, the amount of the fine increases sharply in a short time. Officials urge drivers to strictly follow the rules.
