According to North Korean state media, leader Kim Jong Un observed the construction of a new submarine with his daughter and oversaw tests of long-range surface-to-air missiles.
The missile test near the east coast destroyed air targets at a distance of 200 kilometers. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the test and said they were ready to monitor the missiles.
Kim also observed the construction of an 8,700-ton submarine capable of launching surface-to-air missiles. According to reports, the project is part of North Korea’s efforts to modernize its navy.
The leader emphasized that developing nuclear capabilities and modernizing the navy are essential for North Korea. He described South Korea’s plans for a nuclear submarine and the entry of a U.S. ship into the region as a risk.
