The situation at the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan has escalated once again. On the night of December 24, two Tajik border guards heroically lost their lives during an armed clash with a group of terrorists who infiltrated from the neighboring country's territory. The State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan issued an official statement regarding this tragic incident.
Details of the shooting at the "Sod" post
The incident occurred in the territory of the "Sarchashma" border detachment in Shamsiddin Shohin district. Three armed militants crossed the border covertly under the cover of darkness.
- Encounter: Border guards identified the trespassers and demanded their surrender, after which the terrorists opened fire.
- Outcome: Following a brief exchange of fire, all three militants were neutralized.
- Loss: Unfortunately, during the operation, two servicemen—Zirekhbon Navrozbekov and Ismatullo Kurbonov—were killed in the line of duty.
Seized weapons and ammunition
The militants were reportedly planning major sabotage operations within Tajikistan's territory, as evidenced by the materials found in their possession. The following items were seized at the scene:
- Three M-16 rifles and one Kalashnikov assault rifle.
- Three pistols with silencers and 10 hand grenades.
- Night vision devices, explosives, and a significant amount of ammunition.
Stern warning to the Taliban
The Tajik side accused Afghanistan's Taliban government of negligence over the incident. It was noted that this marks the third armed attack in the past month. Earlier, militants also targeted Chinese workers in Tajikistan, resulting in fatalities.
“These incidents prove that the Taliban movement is failing to uphold its international commitments to ensure border security. The Afghan leadership must formally apologize to the people of Tajikistan and take concrete measures,” the official statement declared.
Situation under control
Currently, security measures at the border have been significantly strengthened, and the situation is assessed as stable. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigative efforts. The Tajik government has stated resolutely that it possesses all necessary resources and capabilities to defend its borders.
