US President Donald Trump said that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured by US special forces “inside the fortress.” According to Trump, Maduro and his wife will be taken to New York via the aircraft carrier Iwo Jima.
“They were brought to the carrier by helicopter, and I’m sure they enjoyed that flight. But we must remember: they killed many people,” the US president said.
Trump said the operation to capture Venezuela’s leader was initially supposed to take place four days earlier but was delayed due to weather conditions. There were no fatalities among the troops involved, though several soldiers were wounded.
“We wanted to do it four days ago, but the weather was unfavorable,” he said.
Trump said he spoke with Maduro a week before the operation and urged him to surrender. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi also said charges were filed against the Venezuelan president for narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking, weapons possession, and storing machine guns and explosive devices against the United States.
According to the US president, the operation could lead to significant political and military consequences for Maduro and his wife.
