Delcy Rodríguez to serve as Venezuela’s acting president

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has ruled that the country’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez will perform the duties of head of state in the absence of Nicolás Maduro. According to the court’s statement, Rodríguez “assumes the presidency to ensure continuity of governance and comprehensive protection of the country.”
Prior to this decision, on Saturday Delcy Rodríguez addressed the public on Venezuela’s state television, saying that Nicolás Maduro remains the country’s only legitimate president, but that she is ready to lead the government as his deputy. She condemned the United States’ “armed aggression” against Venezuela and stressed that the government is prepared to protect the people.
Rodríguez’s video address was backed by her brother, Venezuela’s parliamentary speaker Jorge Rodríguez, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, all shown together as a united front.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump, responding to a question about Venezuela, said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spoken with Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who allegedly stated that “America is ready to do whatever it believes is necessary to make Venezuela great again.” Trump also did not rule out the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to Venezuela if needed.
Meanwhile, escalating political relations between Venezuela and the United States are entering a new phase. The political situation in Venezuela could further complicate global politics and lead to unexpected moves that may reshape international priorities.
