Although the birth rate in South Korea has increased, the death rate remains even higher

Despite the fact that the number of births in South Korea has shown positive growth for the second consecutive year, the country’s population continues to decline. This is attributed to the fact that the number of deaths remains significantly higher than the number of births. Local media reported this.
According to official data, 258,242 babies were registered as born in the country last year. This figure is approximately 15,000 higher than in 2024 and has raised some hope against the backdrop of recent declines. At the same time, the number of deaths reached 366,149, which was also higher than the previous year.
As a result, the gap between births and deaths exceeded 107,000 people, and it was noted that natural population decline has been continuing for six consecutive years.
Regionally, the highest number of births was recorded in Gyeonggi Province, where more than 77,000 children were born. This was followed by Seoul and the city of Incheon. Among cities, Hwaseong remains the leader in terms of the number of births.
An analysis of the demographic structure shows that the largest share of the population consists of people aged 50. The next positions are occupied by those aged 60 and older, as well as middle-aged groups. Meanwhile, the number of children and young people continues to decrease year by year.
Experts note that despite partial growth in births, population ageing and the declining share of the younger generation could lead to long-term social and economic challenges for South Korea. Therefore, the government stresses the need to further strengthen measures aimed at easing the demographic crisis.
