Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the delegations of Russia, Ukraine, and the United States will hold the first trilateral consultations in the United Arab Emirates on January 23. He emphasized that we are talking about dialogue at the "technical level," and if this format works, it can become an important step in discussing problems.
What does a three-way format provide?
Zelenskyy believes that such meetings themselves are a positive signal: the parties can keep communication channels open at least at the working level. This, as a rule, serves to prepare a "road map" for larger decisions at the next stage. Reuters previously reported that Ukraine would support the US-proposed trilateral negotiation idea if it yielded results.
Whitkoff journeys and negotiation chains
Against the backdrop of these events, the visit of US President's Special Representative Steve Whitkoff to Moscow is also on the agenda. According to Reuters, he continued discussing approaches to ending the war with the Russian leadership as part of the negotiations, and regional meetings were also mentioned as further addresses.
The meeting on January 23rd is expected to last two days. If the parties can find common ground even in technical matters, then at the next stage the field for dialogue at the political level will be much more "ready." The main intrigue here is one: there's a lot of talk, and how quickly the result appears - that's what determines.
