A shocking case in Kazakhstan: a 1 year 9 month old child swallowed 31 magnets, putting the child’s life in serious danger. According to “Kazinform”, the toddler was brought to a hospital in Almaty in a very severe condition.
During examinations, it became known that there were many magnets in the child’s intestines. Doctors noted that perforations had appeared in several points of the small intestine, and inflammation in the abdominal cavity was intensifying. In such a situation, time is not “gold” — it is directly a matter of life and death.
Specialists said that the only way to save the child was an emergency surgery. Surgeons opened the abdominal cavity using the laparotomy method, removed the magnets, stitched the damaged areas, cleaned the abdominal cavity, and installed drainage.
The most dangerous part is that even if the magnets were swallowed separately, inside the intestines they are attracted to each other. Intestinal walls get trapped between them, blood circulation is disrupted, tissues are damaged, holes form, and peritonitis can develop in a short time.
Asqar Rizvanov, a surgeon at the Children’s Emergency Medical Care Center, emphasized exactly this point: parents often do not realize how quickly the condition can worsen.
Specialists warn once again: even if just one magnet is swallowed, it is necessary to see a doctor immediately. Several magnets mean a direct threat to a child’s life. Therefore, small magnetic toys and parts at home should be kept “away from children”.
