In Antarctica a rare event was observed

In the sky over Antarctica an annular total solar eclipse occurred. The press service of Арктика ва Антарктика тадқиқот институти reported this.

It is reported that on February 17 of the current year, in the Southern Hemisphere, a rare annular total solar eclipse was recorded. The total phase of the eclipse lasted a little more than two minutes, and the overall duration of the phenomenon was approximately four and a half hours. Scientists of Арктика ва Антарктика тадқиқот институти also managed to capture this rare astronomical scene.

The report explains that “if during a total solar eclipse the Moon is sufficiently farther from the Earth and cannot completely cover the Sun, it appears in the form of a ring. At such times the Sun’s bright ring-shaped edge is visible — a very astonishing view. However, in such an eclipse it is not possible to see the solar corona or the stars around it.”

It is also noted that, as astronomers had said earlier, the eclipse could be seen only in that region itself. At the “Мирний” station in Antarctica, only a few people were able to observe it.
