Colorado-based company Radia plans to build the world’s largest cargo aircraft, named WindRunner. This aircraft is specifically designed to transport large blade components of wind power equipment and could significantly expand the potential of onshore wind energy.
Approximately $150 million in investment has been raised for the WindRunner project. The aircraft will be 108 meters long with a wingspan of 80 meters. It will be capable of carrying either a single 105-meter blade or two 95-meter blades. According to construction plans, the aircraft will also be compatible with 1,800-meter gravel runways.
Officials emphasize that the success of the project could mark a major turning point in the energy and military cargo markets. The US Department of Defense has also begun exploring the aircraft's potential for military cargo transport.
Currently, the project is in the wind tunnel small-scale model testing phase, but the company plans to carry out the first real flight by 2030.
