Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has confirmed that the production of an electric version of the Golf model will be delayed until the end of the decade. Initially, the model was expected to be introduced in 2028, but the company states that its current electric vehicle lineup is sufficient. This is reported by Autocar.co.uk reports .

According to Schäfer, Volkswagen is currently meeting market demand with models such as the ID Polo, the updated ID 3 Neo, and the upcoming ID Cross. The delay of the electric Golf is linked to giving new models time to establish their market position and technical challenges in developing the SSP platform.

The new SSP platform is crucial for the Volkswagen Group, as it aims to bridge the price gap between internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles. This architecture will first be used in Audi and Porsche models before Volkswagen begins implementing it in its own vehicles.

Increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers has forced the company to reconsider its cost and investment calculations. In the future, the electric Golf is planned to be produced at the plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, while the production of the traditional combustion-engine Golf will be moved to Mexico.
