“AI-92” price drop: just a price change or the start of systemic reform?

While “Uzbekneftgaz” stated that this aims to stabilize the domestic market, experts emphasize that the situation should be assessed not only in terms of price, but also fuel quality and systemic reforms.

In recent days, the news about the price drop of AI-92 gasoline has become a topic of discussion in social networks and the media. At first glance, this has created a positive impression for many, but looking deeper, it may indicate not only a decrease in price, but also the beginning of important systemic changes.

The price has dropped — that’s a fact. But why?
According to official information from JSC “Uzbekneftgaz,” at the Bukhara oil refinery the cost of one ton of AI-92 gasoline in exchange trades decreased from 12 million 881 thousand UZS to 12 million 628 thousand UZS. This means a starting price of about 9,400 UZS per liter. Clear, precise figure. But what caused this reduction?
Officials explain it by “optimization of production processes” and “comprehensive measures to reduce production costs.” That’s fine. But how exactly were these measures implemented? Why is nothing said about lost billions, unprofitable contracts, and corruption risks that surface from time to time?

Fuel quality — more important than price
The price of AI-92 gasoline has dropped, but what can we say about its quality? Is this fuel imported from oil-exporting countries or produced entirely domestically? Issues of technological modernization of the Bukhara plant, compliance with environmental standards, and safety for car engines should also be on the agenda.

Lowering the price is good, but strengthening quality control is just as important. People want not cheap fuel that burns quickly and damages engines, but stable and durable fuel suitable for long-term use.

Market reforms: genuine or artificial stability?
The strategy of “Uzbekneftgaz,” adorned with words about market stability and loyalty to domestic consumers, sounds good. But how much are these strategies based on real market conditions? Today the price of gasoline has indeed decreased, but how will this affect a market where prices can change weekly, and where private gas stations set other tariffs due to artificial shortages?

An important question: will cheaper gasoline bring real relief to the consumer, or will it remain only in the statistics?

Price dropped — hope arose
The reduction in AI-92’s price is undoubtedly noteworthy. The fact that this is being carried out under the instructions of the head of state shows that there is a move toward serving the public interest. But this is only the beginning. Ahead lies the need to form a competitive, economically strong fuel policy with quality, control, transparency.

The fuel market for the people should be not only a means of transport, but also an indicator of stability in the economy. What matters is not a temporary drop in prices, but systemic and long-term reforms that bring real relief.
