French regulator AMF sets June 30 deadline for MiCA licensing

The French Financial Markets Authority (AMF) has issued a warning to crypto companies operating in the country without a license. According to the regulator, companies must obtain the necessary authorizations by June 30 or exit the market. During a press event on Thursday, AMF President Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani emphasized that companies unable to secure a license by the deadline must have clear plans to migrate clients to other platforms and cease operations. This is reported by Cointelegraph.com .

In accordance with the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework, crypto service providers are required to be licensed to operate. The advantage of this system is that once a company obtains a license in one of the 27 EU member states, it gains the right to provide services freely across all other member states through a process known as passporting.

As MiCA deadlines approach, debates are intensifying among EU nations regarding licensing requirements and the centralization of oversight. Specifically, the proposal to transfer authority over crypto regulation to the Paris-based European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has faced criticism. Critics argue that centralizing control could limit the powers of national regulators and jeopardize the mutual recognition of licenses.

A representative from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) stated that it is too early to modify the MiCA structure. According to the official, regulators need time to assess the impact of MiCA, which came into force in 2024. Meanwhile, European Commission advisor Peter Kerstens did not rule out that new requirements could be added or existing rules revised in 2026 as the crypto industry continues to evolve.
