A national strategy against cancer is being developed in Uzbekistan - the main goal is to save lives

Serious work has begun on the formation of the National Strategy for Combating Cancer for 2025–2035. At a meeting held in Tashkent on April 28–30, oncologists, analysts, representatives of the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other international organizations and strategic centers agreed on a preliminary draft of this document.

Action Plan Launched

It is emphasized that this initiative is being implemented within the framework of the second phase of the “Development of Oncology Services in the Republic of Uzbekistan” project, with the support of the Islamic Development Bank. The formation of the Action Plan was also officially launched within the framework of the meeting.

This strategic document is being prepared, covering not only medical, but also social, economic and spiritual solutions.

Human life is more important than numbers

According to the UN Office in Uzbekistan, more than 100,000 cancer patients are currently registered in the country. More than 20,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The vast majority of them, if detected early and treated in a timely manner, can be completely cured.

“But this is impossible without a systemic approach. Every plan, every step - from equipment to personnel to public awareness and trust - everything is taken into account. This is not just about reducing statistics, but about saving lives,” the international organization said in a statement.

Decisions are based on science, experience and people

The meeting emphasized that the strategy requires a person-centered approach. This includes not only clinical diagnosis and treatment, but also information and communication activities, public awareness, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

Currently, the responsible authorities are working on the legal, financial and operational mechanisms of the program. The final version of the cancer control strategy is expected to be presented to the public in the coming months.
