Mouth sores? Causes of stomatitis and home remedies

Mouth sores? Causes of stomatitis and home remedies
Are you experiencing sudden painful sores, white patches, or swelling in your mouth? It could be stomatitis. In most cases, it starts with mild discomfort, but if left untreated, eating, speaking, or even drinking water can become difficult. Let’s explore the causes and home remedies for stomatitis.

What is stomatitis?
Stomatitis is an inflammation of the mouth’s mucous membranes, often appearing as white or red sores, patches, or swelling on the tongue, inside the lips, cheeks, and gums. Pain, burning, and discomfort are the main symptoms.

Causes:
1. Weakened immune system — allows bacteria in the mouth to thrive.
2. Poor oral hygiene — infrequent brushing or bad toothbrushes can trigger stomatitis.
3. Stress and lack of sleep — mental health affects oral health too.
4. Vitamin deficiency — especially B12, iron, and folic acid.
5. Allergic reactions — to toothpaste or food ingredients.
6. Viruses and bacteria — herpes virus is a common cause.

Home treatment methods:
1. Saltwater rinse:
Mix 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse 3–4 times a day.

2. Chamomile and mint tea:
Chamomile reduces inflammation; mint soothes. Brew together and rinse.

3. Ice cubes:
Apply to the sore to ease the pain.

4. Garlic paste:
Crushed garlic has antibacterial properties. Apply carefully — it might sting!

5. Baking soda rinse:
Dissolve 1 tsp baking soda in warm water and rinse your mouth several times daily.

6. Honey:
A natural antiseptic. Dab a little directly on the sore.

When to see a doctor:
- If the sore doesn’t heal within 10 days
- If there's bleeding or high fever
- If the sore is growing — seek medical attention.

Prevention tips:
- Brush your teeth twice a day.
- Eat foods rich in vitamin B and iron.
- Avoid stress and get quality sleep.
- Visit a dentist every 6 months.
