A common dental disease may lead to dangerous cancer

Scientific research conducted in Finland has revealed a serious threat to human health. According to researchers at the University of Helsinki, periodontitis — a disease of the gums and teeth — may, over time, create a basis for the development of a more severe illness: cancer.

As part of the study, 68,000 adults with various oral problems were observed over a period of 10 years. The results were shocking: about 14.5 percent of them died from different types of cancer. Among them, 11.3 percent were diagnosed with periodontitis.

Professor Timo Sorsa explained that bacteria caused by periodontitis do not only affect the gums and teeth. They are capable of spreading throughout the body via the oral cavity. In this process, certain enzymes produced in an unhealthy mouth environment may contribute to the formation of cancer cells in the gastrointestinal tract organs.

Experts emphasize that neglecting oral hygiene does not only risk losing teeth but can also lead to life-threatening consequences. Therefore, paying attention to dental health, visiting a dentist regularly, and taking preventive measures are of vital importance.
