Samarkand Marathon Held Amid Smog

Environmental issues in Uzbekistan are escalating to a new level. Air quality is deteriorating not only in the capital but also in other major cities of the country, notably Samarkand and Andijan.

Today, November 11, Uzhydromet recommended that residents of Tashkent and Andijan wear masks due to poor air quality. Simultaneously, a video related to the Samarkand marathon has been circulating on social media.

The video shows people running amidst smog. Users in the comments pointed out that marathon participants are likely causing more harm to their health than gaining any benefit.

"Why is there a need to promote physical activities like marathons at a time when the air itself is killing us? It seems that the responsible officials don’t live in Uzbekistan.

Otherwise, they wouldn’t be cutting down trees," wrote one user. As of 12:00 PM, the PM2.5 concentration in Samarkand was 11.9 times higher than the annual limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Breathing in the city is considered hazardous.
