According to the Tashkent city administration, on days when the amount of dust in the capital's air sharply increased, work on moistening road surfaces was intensified as the fastest and most effective method. This approach is not accidental - it is scientifically based and is used when air pollution rises in many megacities around the world.
Currently, the city administration and the Department of Improvement are taking a number of practical measures:
- moistening of the road surface with water through special gas stations;
- irrigation of all green areas throughout the city;
- temporarily reactivate all fountain and microclimate installations despite the end of the fountain season.
The khokimiyat also explained why this tactic is effective. According to them, the main problem is small particles in the air, namely PM10 and PM2.5 dust. When the road is moistened, these particles combine with the water layer, fall to the ground, and the risk of re-emergence into the air is significantly reduced.
Also, during the movement of cars, dust from the dry road surface constantly rises into the air. A humidified road significantly reduces this "secondary pollination." International studies show that this type of pollination can account for up to 25-40% of urban PM emissions.
Spraying water on roads slightly reduces the temperature and softens the microclimate. When the temperature drops, dust particles don't jump in the air for long, and natural processes that help precipitate them faster are activated. At the same time, irrigated trees and shrubs also perform the function of a "natural filter" better - leaves retain dust, and the air purification process is significantly activated.
As the khokimiyat emphasized, moistening the roads does not completely eliminate air pollution, but it is one of the most urgent measures that allows a noticeable reduction in dust content within a few hours.
Along with this, a number of other large-scale works are being carried out within the framework of the systemic approach:
- conducting control raids in greenhouse farms;
- installation of special filters in boiler houses;
- strengthening environmental monitoring and control.
The Tashkent city administration recommends that residents monitor air quality data through official sources, limit outdoor activities on days with high levels of pollution, and, if necessary, wear masks. All possibilities are being used to temporarily alleviate the situation in the capital's atmosphere.
