Import of potent substances into Uzbekistan stopped

Uzbekistan’s customs authorities carried out a series of measures aimed at preventing the import of the potent substance “sibutramine.” In particular, at Islam Karimov International Airport in Tashkent, a passenger on the “Istanbul–Tashkent” flight attempted to pass through the “green” corridor with weight-loss coffee worth a total of 33 million soums, consisting of 2,000 packages. According to the examination results, “sibutramine” was found in this coffee, but the packaging contained no information about it. Also, at the “Fergana” border customs post, another citizen attempted to import 360 units of weight-loss coffee worth 7.2 million soums. “Sibutramine” was also detected in this product. According to the Customs Committee, “sibutramine” is included in Uzbekistan’s list of especially potent substances, and even the presence of 0.5 grams of this substance entails criminal liability. To date, the Central Customs Laboratory has identified cases of illegal import of products from 39 brands containing potent substances such as “sibutramine” and “topentatol.” During the current year, the country’s customs officers prevented the illegal transport of more than 1.1 tons of psychotropic and potent substances. This figure is 3.6 times higher than in the same period last year.
