Real Madrid have made an unusual decision regarding the future of two of their most experienced players, Croatian midfielder Luka Modric and Spanish defender Lucas Vazquez.
According to Spanish publication AS, the club has offered the two players new contracts for just two weeks, with their contracts expiring on June 30.
It is understood that Madrid intends to use the experienced players only for the Club World Cup. It is worth noting that the organizers of this new format of the competition, organized by FIFA, have advised participating clubs to sign short-term contracts with players whose terms are expiring.
The Real Madrid management has most likely decided to part ways with Lucas Vazquez at the end of the season. However, Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric could be kept in the team for another season. Before that, the 39-year-old star will have to accept a sharp reduction in his salary and give up his role in the first team, acting as a reserve option.
