Cannavaro: “The match against Uruguay was a test for us”

After the friendly match against Uruguay, Uzbekistan national team head coach Fabio Cannavaro answered journalists’ questions at a press conference. The Italian specialist spoke openly about the team’s condition, the quality of the game, and future plans.

Cannavaro first noted that several players were unavailable due to injuries.
“Unfortunately, nine of our players could not participate because of injuries. Therefore, it was important for me to assess those available and spend time with them. I’m satisfied with their efforts — the boys gave their all on the pitch. We arrived in Malaysia just two days before the match and had almost no time to rest,” said Cannavaro.

According to him, the match against Uruguay served as great motivation.
“Scoring against such a strong opponent is a big inspiration. We also had chances to take the lead earlier. Off the ball, we played well. It’s not easy to put Uruguay under pressure — most of their players play in the Brazilian league. I have a good team, and there’s room to make it even stronger,” he said.

Commenting on Marcelo Bielsa’s positive words, Cannavaro said he was honored.
“Hearing kind words from a coach like Bielsa is a great honor. He’s one of the managers who changed football mentality. There’s a lot I can learn from him,” said Cannavaro.

When asked about physical readiness, he responded realistically:
“Yes, I agree, we’re not yet at Uruguay’s level physically. But we still have eight months. It’s not just about training — it’s also about nutrition, sleep, and discipline. Preparation for the World Cup must be gradual. The tournament will be tough,” he stressed.

Cannavaro also shared plans for November:
“The association has agreed on two friendly matches in Dubai in November. I’ll stay in Uzbekistan to watch national league games and work with local coaches,” he said.

The Italian coach also commented on the goals conceded:
“The first goal came from an offside position. In the second, we gave too much space to the opponent. We must defend closer inside our box. Focus and concentration are crucial. During halftime, I told the players the first 15 minutes would be decisive. Today we saw what happens when concentration is lost,” said Cannavaro.

Speaking about the substitutes, he added:
“The players who came on entered with good energy. In the second half, I noticed some fatigue and tried to lift the team’s spirit. At the end, we played better and managed to score. Since my arrival, every player has given their best on the field.”

Cannavaro’s words reflect the growing confidence and hard-working spirit within the team, as well as its firm steps toward the future.
